Understanding Device Limits
Personal use is free and has no paid-device limit. Device limits apply only to organization licenses and previously purchased or legacy licenses.
Existing licenses keep the device limit they were issued with. The app shows licensed device usage under Settings -> Organization License.
What Counts as a Device?
Each unique Mac counts as one device. The device is identified by hardware characteristics:
- Reinstalling macOS = same device
- Upgrading macOS = same device
- New Mac = new device
Reaching Your Limit
If you try to activate on a new device and have reached your limit:
- Deactivate an old device - Free up a slot from a device you no longer use
- Contact support - Email support if you need more slots
Best Practices
- Deactivate before selling or giving away a Mac
- Contact support if you forget to deactivate
